Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not only the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
