In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Consultations Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
