A minimum of thirteen individuals perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
